St. John the Baptist
Primary School

Curriculum

We believe that children learn best when:
*    they feel confident because of previous experiences of success
*
they are expected to learn
*
their natural curiosity is aroused
*  they are active and involved - discovering, solving problems, explaining
what they are doing.
*  they feel safe
*
they feel challenged
*
they are mature enough to master the task
*  the task is interesting and makes sense
  * they have the opportunity to observe and imitate others
*  they have plenty of chance to practise
*
they are encouraged to take risks

We base our policies and programs on the Curriculum and Standards Frameworks II which have been set down by the Victorian Department of Education, Employment and Training. There are eight Key Learning Areas (KLAs) and each of these is taught at St. John the Baptist Primary School.  These KLAs are:

ENGLISH
MATHEMATICS
SCIENCE
TECHNOLOGY
THE ARTS
HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION,
STUDIES OF SOCIETY AND THE ENVIRONMENT (SOSE)
LANGUAGES OTHER THAN ENGLISH (LOTE)    - Italian (P-6) & Japanese (Yr.5 & 6)

Specialist Programs

The school offers music, Italian, physical education as specialist programs.

Homework

Homework is a valuable part of the learning process. It can help students to develop the study skills they need to achieve at school through the reinforcement and application of skills learned in the classroom. Homework helps develop a sense of responsibility. It also provides the opportunity for parents to share in the learning process with their child.

Professional development of staff in these areas is a priority and staff attend in-services in school time and in their own time to ensure that the best in education is offered at St. John the Baptist Primary School.

Teachers are very happy to discuss your child's individual needs at any time by appointment or at regular parent/teacher interview sessions.
